Joining a 32 member team, Mrs. Beverly Daniel-Merrique, Youth Placement Officer I, has been appointed to the National AID Coordinating Committee (NACC) at the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday December 13, 2016. Reestablished with its Secretariat under the Office of the Prime Minister, the NACC will oversee the national effort in the prevention, control and treatment of HIV/AIDS, as well as the care and support of persons living with HIV/AIDS.
The Honourable Ayanna Webster-Roy, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, reminded Committee Members that their ultimate goals are to “improve the quality of life for someone who is living with the disease and to protect those not yet infected so that they can remain HIV negative.”
The Committee comprises members of Government Ministries, Non-Governmental Organizations and International agencies. They will be capably led by the Chairperson, Mrs. Heather Rodney; Assistant Manager, HIV and AIDS Advocacy; and Sustainability Centre, Ministry of Labour and Small Enterprise Development.
“Communication is about selling a message,” was the assertion by the Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh, Minister of Health as he addressed the August Assembly. He urged all attendees that our communication to the nation has to engender behavior modification to halt the spread of the virus and empower all citizens to exercise personal responsibility over their sexual health.
The nation can look forward to a six-month review of the NACC functioning to ensure that staffing, operations, transitioning to a statutory body or appropriate organization and finalization of the national policy stay on track and are properly executed.
