 The Ministry of Sport opened its new Sangre Grande Office on Friday 27th September, 2013 on the compound of the Sangre Grande Community Swimming Pool, corner Sookeran & Sellier Streets, Sangre Grande.

Approximately 75 persons inclusive of Ms. Hazel Holder- Edward representative from the office of the Honourable Dr. Rupert Griffith and Mr. Keshwar Maharaj, Chairman Sangre Grande Regional Corporation attended the event. Also, attending were Ministry of Sport support Staff, SPORTT support staff, Sangre Grande Pool Staff, Principals, Councillors and Sportsmen and Sportsmen from the Sangre Grande area and its environs.

Bringing greeting on behalf of the Honourable Dr. Rupert Griffith, MP for Sangre Grande was Ms. Hazel Holder- Edward whilst Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Mr. Ashwin Creed presented the feature remarks.

PS Creed stated that the opening of the Sangre Grande Office was a major initiative as the Ministry continued to create sporting opportunities and encourage total participation in sport throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ministry of Sport through its “Taking Sport to Rural Areas Programme” which was launched in June last year at the Toco Composite School, has impacted many rural communities and the establishment of this office is a part of the Ministry’s initiative to provide sport for all.

The ‘Sport for All’ program promotes healthy lifestyles and increased participation in sports in schools and communities. Improved physical health contributes to productivity among citizens and reduces the need for medical services.
The Ministry of Sport adheres to the National Sport Policy of Trinidad and Tobago. This policy offers a formal, holistic and systemic framework for the development of sport.

The Mission Statement of the National Sport policy speaks of the promotion of “Total Participation in Sport, Quality Training and Excellence in Sport.” This policy is aligned with eight major related objectives: PS Creed highlighted two (2) which seeks to: 

• Develop a healthy, disciplined, united and productive society through greater participation in sport and physical education by all members of the society. In this regard special opportunities are made available to children, young people, women and girls, senior citizens and the specially challenged.

And, also seeks to:
• Develop and improve the knowledge and practice of sport in the interest of the holistic development of the individual and the enjoyment by the public at large.

In keeping with the mandate for “Total Participation in Sport”, the Ministry continues to work progressively by developing sporting initiatives and upgrade of facilities that is ideal for the development of sport.
The new Sangre Grande office is one of those sporting inventiveness designed to create opportunities for holistic sport development in rural communities. This office includes three (3) single offices, a conference room, a general office area and all the necessities for its efficient functioning. Stationed at this office to serve the people of Sangre Grande and its environs will be Ministry of Sport Coaches and Sport Development Officers, in addition to representatives from the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago and the Taking to Sport to Rural Areas programme. The Ministry have also agreed to accommodate the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development when necessary.


The construction of this office has definitely enhanced the pre-existing Swimming Pool facility tremendously. Ramps that are in compliance with the requirements for the physically challenged have been installed and there is now a car park with space for 13 vehicles including reserved parking for the physically challenged.
 With this new initiative, PS Creed urged community members and leaders of Sangre Grande and its environs to utilise the services offered by the Ministry of Sport as the Ministry continues to provide opportunities for sport development throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
