The Honourable Darryl Smith poses for a photo with the Canadian women's rugby team, winners of the RAN Sevens

Fourteen men's and ten women's teams from across the region competed in an exhilarating two day, Rugby American North (RAN) 2016 International Rugby Sevens Tournament held over the weekend at CIC Grounds.

The Honourable Darryl Smith was present to support our national Men's and Women's teams who were featured in the premiere regional qualifier for the 2017 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, which is scheduled to take place in April 2017 in Hong Kong. Trinidad and Tobago's national teams secured a fourth-place finish and are currently ranked third in the region.

According to Minister Smith, it is an honour to not only have Trinidad and Tobago represented alongside the fourteen countries that form the union's membership but also more importantly be conferred the host of this year's tournament.

With great anticipation, the Minister is optimistic that Trinidad and Tobago will also be represented at the Olympics Games since Rugby Sevens has gained recognition as an Olympic sport, making its debut in Rio 2016.

The Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs congratulates our national teams on their outstanding performance at the tournament and Canada which copped both the Men's and Women's titles.
