On Wednesday 15th March 2017, the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 was launched at the National Hockey Centre, Eastern Regional Sporting Complex, Tacarigua. This event is scheduled to run from 25th March to 2nd April 2017, where we would see eight participating teams from around the world. The participating teams include Canada, Chile, USA, Barbados, Japan, Russia, Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago will play its first match on 25th March against Russia.
Speaking at today’s launch, the Honourable Minister stated that we need to highlight the sport at the primary school level so that we will have new players coming on board at an early age. He said, at the primary school level, when they see the top level of play by the current players, this will garner interest and support for the sport. He wished the players all the best and stated they are the stars. He urged them to take the opportunity to perform well and shine. He also thanked all the sponsors for coming on board and those who played a part to bring the event to fruition.
This action packed tournament gives hockey fans an opportunity to see their team go all the way to the World Cup and Olympics. It is composed of four rounds and played over two years. The Hockey World League shines a spotlight all around the world where even the smallest hockey playing nations get to participate.
