The Catch National Junior Tennis Championships served up a great start on Saturday 8th April 2017 at the National Racquet Centre, Tacarigua. The Honourable Darryl Smith, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, opened the tournament which is scheduled to take place from 8th April to 13th April 2017.
Minister Smith, was very happy to see the number of participants and the parents that came out to support. He thanked the President of Trinidad and Tobago Tennis Association, Mr. Hayden Mitchell, for working alongside the Ministry to push the development of the sport at the primary school level. He stated that the Ministry is developing plans for clay courts as this will be better for young tennis players in the sport. He thanked the main sponsor Catch and all other sponsors for their continued support over the years.
Mr. Hayden Mitchell, President of Trinidad and Tobago Tennis Association, stated that it is the vision of the Association to have their players be among the top 150 in the world by 2026. This is in part made possible by sponsors like Catch, who have over the past 29 years contributed to the Championships. He believes that with sponsors continued support he will see that vision to fruition. He also thanked Minister Smith and his Ministry for making the Championship possible. He thanked the parents for their contributions and encouraged participants to work hard and to have fun.
The National Junior Championship serves as the showcase for Junior Tennis in Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting our best players while introducing new players to tennis.
