The Honourable Darryl Smith, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs and Dr. The Honourable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, presented boxing equipment to Champs Boxing Academy, World Class Boxing Gym and Magic Community Boxing Gym, on 11th April 2017, at the Diego Martin Boys RC School. This initiative is a part of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control’s (TBBC) mandate to facilitate the development of boxing and to regulate boxing contests nationally. This initiative is the first of its kind untaken by the TBBC and there are plans to expand the programme in the near future.
Minister Smith said that emphasis needs to be place on our youth and it is the Government’s policy to be more youth focused. He underscored the need for the sport to be introduced at the primary school level so that the sport can be developed and children can benefit from the availability of programmes before entering secondary school. He encouraged young boxers, parents and coaches to work together for positive development in the sport. He also thanked the Boxing Board for the work that they are doing and the coaches of the respective gyms.
Dr. The Honourable, Keith Rowley stated that good leadership of the schools is important to propel the development of sport and to maximize involvement. He praised teachers, principals, parents and students that get involve in the programmes of the school. He emphasised the significance of taking part in extracurricular activities for holistic development. He urged all to get involve as he reiterated that it is not only Government’s contribution but public and private partnerships and community involvement.
The coaches of the respective Gyms thanked the Minister and the TBBC for the equipment and the development of young boxers. Thirteen Gyms are earmarked to receive equipment with seven gyms receiving equipment to date.
