Minister of Youth Development and National Service, the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds, yesterday, Monday 30th November 2020, presented Instruments of Appointment to the Members of the Advisory Friendly Societies Council, at the Ministry’s Head Office, #2 Elizabeth Street, St. Clair, Port of Spain.
The nine-member Council comprises Mr. Farai Hove Masaisai, Chairman, Ms. Chandra Mohammed, Vice Chairman, Ms. Zalica R Teelucksingh, Mr. Imtiaz Ali, Mr. Mervyn Franklyn, Ms. Tova Lin-Sandy, Mr. John Bosco Romany, Mr. Urban Huggins, Mr. George James and Ms. Gail Tim Kee.
Minister Hinds, during his brief remarks, acknowledged the role of the Friendly Societies as having “contributed socially and economically to the livelihood and wellbeing of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.” He also stressed the importance of a “lively, active and improved Friendly Societies Council”
The Advisory Council will promote the general welfare of the people of Trinidad and Tobago, by encouraging the growth, development, improvement and expansion of Societies.
Friendly Societies offer assistance to members of communities for health care, insurance and general welfare and provide opportunities for savings, medical plans, land acquisition, loans and more.
The Office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies and Building Societies (Friendly Societies Division) is responsible for the supervision and regulation of the operations of Societies registered under the Friendly Societies Act and Building Societies Act respectively.
The Friendly Societies Division is now under the purview of the newly-established Ministry of Youth Development and National Service.
The Ministry remains ready to support the effective and efficient operations of organizations and committees such as to the Advisory Friendly Societies Council, which serve the needs of our nation’s youth, while contributing to the development of Trinidad and Tobago.
