The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago will host the official opening ceremony of the National Aquatic Centre on Friday, 30th September 2016 at Balmain, Couva. The ceremony will commence at 6:00pm. On Saturday, 1st October and Sunday, 2nd October 2016, an Invitational Swim Meet will also be held from 9:00am each day.
This facility is one of the three Mega Facilities completed in the fiscal year 2016. It will provide Trinidad and Tobago with the capability to not only attract international aquatic events but also to develop national water sport teams, while offering to the public secure facilities in a safe and comfortable environment. The Aquatic Centre is the only one of its kind in the English speaking Caribbean and features a 50m competition pool, a 50m outdoor warm-up pool, and a 25m diving facility. There is permanent seating for 700 persons, a fitness room with sauna, Turkish baths (with water vapour production), a cold water pool, an aqua gym, and a fitness room.
To open the event, Jamaican Olympic Diver Yona Knight-Wisdom will perform exhibition dives. Yona was the first male Jamaican Diver at the Rio 2016 Olympics as well as the first male Diver competing at the Olympics from the Caribbean. There will also be exhibitions in Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo teams from Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, and Puerto Rico.
The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs
