The Honourable Rupert Griffith, Minister of Sport (c) looks on at drawings of the facility at Sangre Grande, alongside Mr. Nazeemol Mohammed, Special Adviser to the Ministry of Sport (l) and Project Consultant Mr Clifford Murray (r).
The Honourable Dr. Rupert Griffith, Minister of Sport recently toured some of the sporting facilities currently under construction in his constituency of Toco/Sangre Grande. The premier facility, located at Ojoe Road, Sangre Grande, is a multi-purpose indoor arena, outdoor playing field and tennis court, scheduled for completion in April 2015.
The indoor court will accommodate basketball, netball, badminton, table tennis and other sports and the playing surface can be increased or minimised with moveable seating. The outdoor playing field will be smaller than usual (about the size of a hockey pitch) allowing for 'small-goal' football games. Minister Griffith was in high praise of the progress being made at the site, saying "I am pleased that my constituents in Sangre Grande will soon have access to a safe and modern facility for recreation. This important work by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago is being replicated in communities across the country with the upgrade of recreation grounds and pavilions. We must never lose sight of the grassroots nature of sport - communities are where stars are born - and the Ministry of Sport is committed to providing quality facilities for the people."
The multipurpose facility at Sangre Grande is one of six similar venues to facilitate sport and recreation in the burgeoning population centres of Trinidad and Tobago.
