Sport for Reconciliation – Reuniting Communities
The Honourable Anil Roberts Minister of Sport paid tribute at a prize giving function held at the Capital Plaza on Friday 15th November, 2013 to the winners of the Life-sport Festival which was held last weekend at the Constantine Park, Macoya and also to participants of the calypso, chutney and extempo competitions held earlier this year.
At the award ceremony there were prizes for inter centre competitions in football, basketball and cricket in addition to prizes for the cultural competitions for calypso, chutney and exempo.
Life-sport is a true reflection of the Ministry’s mantra Sport for All-Sport for Life. Given the increasingly high levels of criminal activity being experienced in our communities, the Ministry of Sport designed this programme to impel unemployed young men to get involve in sport, in order to redirect their lives into productive activities and positive engagements. This programme is currently being conducted in 33 communities throughout Trinidad for young men between the ages 16-25.
The participants of the LIFE-sport programme are being trained in social life-skills to assist in their transition to responsible adulthood. They are also afforded opportunities for academic achievement and employability through training in sport, coaching, technical/ vocational learning, numeracy and literacy.
