Leading the charge: The Honourable Fitzgerald E. Hinds, Minister of Youth Development and National Service, leads the tour of the former St Michael’s School for Boys in Diego Martin on Saturday, January 9, 2021.

Minister of Youth Development and National Service, the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds, accompanied by Permanent Secretary, Farook Hosein and Deputy Permanent Secretaries, Marcia London-McKellar and Claire Davidson-Williams, toured the former St Michael’s School for Boys, which is now under the purview of the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS) on Saturday 9th January, 2021.

Representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Works and Transport, Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), Diego Martin Regional Corporation, Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), Community-based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP) and the Anglican Board, were also present as Minister Hinds inspected the trade instruction block, administrative buildings, classrooms, kitchen and dining facilities, dormitories and laundry facilities.

The refurbishment cost of these facilities of the former St Michael’s School is estimated at approximately $5.9 Million dollars, of which $3M will be contributed by Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU). According to Minister Hinds, “the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders identified, for the success of this project are critical and urgent. We have a serious work programme ahead of us at the Ministry, whose ethos is not to see the youth as a hindrance, but to realize their true potential as co-contributors of sustainable national development”.

Rehabilitative works are anticipated to begin shortly, and will include electrical, plumbing, painting, roof-works, landscaping, power washing and other miscellaneous works, necessary to enable the Ministry to deliver a Residential Restorative Development Programme for boys aged 12 to 18 years in need of care and supervision.

The MYDNS intends to work with all stakeholders to restore the structural integrity and modernize the facility to positively influence this unique subset of our youth population that are awaiting the completion of this project. Minister Hinds stated that “the rehabilitation of the facility, will be overseen by the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), and post-refurbishment, the TTDF will continue to play an integral role in the facility’s operation, as they have done a great job in facilitating many similar projects and programmes like the CCC and MiLAT, all now under the remit of the MYDNS”.

The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service remains committed to bringing all stakeholders together to promote youth development, and encourage civic-minded citizens to contribute to national service across Trinidad and Tobago.
