You can apply in two ways:
Regional Offices:
The client is an elderly person over 60 years, requiring care and support based on medical and official assessment.
The applicant is the person applying for the service or someone applying on behalf of the elderly (family or non-family). However, if the applicant is non-family, a signed authorization letter from the client/relative must be submitted.
GAPP does not provide emergency caregivers.
The process depends on the availability of a caregiver within the client’s proximity. Once a caregiver is identified, the Regional Co-ordinator conducts an assessment of the client’s needs and their environment. Following this, an orientation is conducted with the Coordinator, the client and the assigned caregiver.
GAPP caregivers provide service Monday–Friday, 8am–4pm (with a one 1-hour lunch break). Service is not offered at night-time, weekends or public holidays.
Each client is provided with a caregiver for a 6-month period. This can be extended for another 6 months after review of the client’s medical status.
The caregiver’s duties are based on the client’s needs (Hygiene, Taking of vitals Blood Pressure, testing of Blood Sugar, Meals, Home Safety, etc.)
GAPP does not facilitate caregivers providing care to their family or relatives.
The Ministry pays a monthly stipend to caregivers. There is no cost to the family.
A caregiver is assigned to one client per household for a 6-month period. If there are two (2) elderly persons in one home requiring care, priority will be given based on their need.
Caregivers are placed within close proximity to the client, as far as is practical.
Caregivers, when applying, are required to submit a Certificate of Character and are also interviewed prior to training.
Some GAPP caregivers enter the Programme trained in this specialized care and would have worked with Dementia /Alzheimer’s clients, however the Ministry does not provide caregivers with that level of training.
There are limited GAPP caregivers trained to provide care for the differently-abled.
Caregivers have specific contracted working hours. The client can engage the caregiver accordingly.
Information can be accessed via the Ministry’s website at www.msya.gov.tt or by emailing gapp.info@gov.tt or visiting the nearest GAPP regional Office.
